500,000 Kindles Last Year, Amazon is About to Launch Kindle 2.0 New Digital book reader Next Monday

Posted on 04 Feb 2009 at 10:00am

Between the crowds of Amazon plan to unveil Kindle 2.0, new Digital book reader next Monday at a New York press event, we are left with a curious question: how many of the original digital book readers (e-book readers) has it sold already? It must be there is some reason behind the launch of kindle 2.0 next week, and who knows if the new version of Kindle has a correlation with the amount of former version of Kindle have been sold last year.

Since the Jeff Benzos and Amazon Company refuse to share this information, let just rely on the information provided by Mark Mahaney, the Citigroup analyst who estimates that Amazon sold 500,000 devices last year. He figures that Kindle will become a $1.2 billion business by 2010.

This number is derived via a filling by Amazon partner Sprint (S) which in charge of the wireless service for the e-book. Mahaney gets to the $1,2 billion number by assuming that Kindle owners will buy a digital book each month. If you are more interested to the prediction on how this new book reader will be looked, Mahaney shares his envision for Kindle 2.0. He predicts that this digital book reader will be longer and thinner than Kindle 1.0 with less crummy keypad and buttons to reduce the chance of you accidentally urn the page. Kindle 2.0 maybe do not have any touch screen feature and no color screen. The estimation price is as low as $300. Whether if the envision is accurate or not, only next Monday’s press release from Amazon that will prove it.
