TechCrunch Turns Black to Commemorate Earth Day

Posted on 24 Apr 2009 at 3:41am

TechCrunch has decided to turn the site’s background of black today to commemorate the Earth Day and in memory of Google’s noble effort last year, when its site went black in honor of Earth Hour.

In observance of Earth Day, we are told to offset  your carbon emissions and there are plenty of apps and websites out there ready to help us do just that and more. Green  is the new black. Speaking of which, if you want to be green, you had better avoid black cars and websites with all-black backgrounds.

Even you should not think of printing out an e-mail unless it has really important information on it that you needed hard copy of like a a contract or a map.

Indeed, green apps are great and TechCrunch fully supports them. The first step to dealing with a problem is often to measure it. There are plenty of Websites that let you measure your carbon footprint such as Co2Stats , (for Websites) and Zerofootprint (for people).

Yet, very often these turn out to be nothing more than green vanity apps, designed to make you feel good about being green, but not really impacting the environment one way or the other.

Zero S all-electric Motorcycle

Posted on 24 Apr 2009 at 2:50am

Zero S electric supermoto or electrimoto completely built around battery and motor, and Engadget were lucky enough to take it for a spin on a hazy, dingy, frequently traffic’d New York City side street and we heard it’s Europe too.

“Zero Motorcycles, started with rechargeable bikes intended for playing in the dirt, but its latest creation, the Zero S, is rather more of an all-rounder. It’s a supermoto or motard, a breed of bike that slots in between a purely off-road dirtbike and a road-focused naked sportbike. While most in this class are little more than dirt models with fewer knobs on their tires and and more preload in the dampers, the S is a totally custom ride.”

Checkout the Zero Motorcycles video below will take you along for the ride.

iPhone Sales Up 123% Year Over Year

Posted on 24 Apr 2009 at 12:53am

Apple sold 2.22 million Macs in the second quarter, 11.01 million iPods and 3.79 million iPhones, which was more than double the number it sold a year ago, and at the same time the company had revenues of US$8.16 billion with net profit of US$1.21 billion.

Mac numbers sold during that period beat estimates, but it is worth noting that sales were down year over year for the first time in about six years, as Silicon Alley Insider noted the other day.

Apple said that two of the main reasons for this is that professional users are buying less of Apple’s “Pro” line during the tough economic times, and besides, particularly in the US, the educational buying market is way down right now.

But on the iPhone side, everything is just peachy as there are now over 35,000 apps in the App Store, and it will surpass one billion downloads tomorrow.

As noted above, iPhone sales were up 123% year over year, and the iPhone is now available in 81 countries. Apple has now sold some 21 million iPhones, and the App Store has reached 37 million devices when you throw in the iPod touch sales.
