According to the company. PC-NJ70A is the first product for which Sharp employed such a touchpad with Intel Corp’s Atom microprocessor which allows it have specifications equivalent to so-called netbooks.

This new product, which is scheduled to be released in late May 2009, is expected to be sold at ¥80,000 (approximately US$813) while Sharp estimates the PC’s added value including the optical sensor LCD panel to be worth about ¥10,000.

Sharp said it has an optical sensor (photo diode) which is formed in each pixel, the optical sensor LCD panel does not need a resistive film or other layers for touch sensors. Hence, it can be made slimmer and brighter more easily than existing touch panels, the company said.

The touchpad can be operated by sliding a finger or an accessory pen just like normal touch panels, Sharp added, and besides it can recognize the shape of an object placed on it with a simple scanning function.
