The graphics core in the PS3 Slim has to be identical or alike to the RSX GPUs, otherwise obtainable games for the PS3 won’t run on the new Sony console.

Toshiba Mobile Display Co Ltd (TMD) boasted three types of three-dimensional (3D) displays at an academic conference called SID Display Week 2009 which was held from May 31 to June 5, 2009, in Texas.

One of the three (3D) displays is based on the integral imaging system that utilizes a lens array to allow viewers to see 3D images with the naked eye. This display has been presented by TMD at several exhibitions in various locations.

The remaining two types were exhibited for the first time, according to TMD. They are (1) the “Time Sequential Autostereoscopic 3D OCB Display,” which provides the same level of resolution even if it is viewed with the naked eye and (2) the “Crosstalk-free 3D Display,” which is viewed using glasses equipped with liquid crystal shutters.

The two 3D displays are based on the OCB (optically compensated bend) technology developed by TMD. This technology is intended for small LCD panels that feature a moving picture response time (MPRT) as short as 3ms.

Besides the OCB technology, TMD realized stereoscopic viewing with the naked eye for the 3D display described in item (1) by applying a special film manufactured by 3M Co of the US to the inner surface of its panel. This special film functions to send images to the left and right eyes at different angles.

With this method, the “effective resolution” of 3D images normally decreases to about half the resolution of the panel. But TMD divided the backlight LEDs into right and left parts and mounted one on either side of the panel so that the LEDs light up alternately via a light guide plate. As a result, the images for the right eye and those for the left eye are displayed in turn, preventing the deterioration of the resolution.

Toshiba Corp has introduced a system that is capable to recognize which area a car driver is looking at, and to be used as a warning for the car driver of negligent driving or to operate car navigation system by combining the eye direction and manually-operated switches.

Toshiba had demonstrated this system - which detects the face and eye directions of the driver using images shot with a camera - at Automotive Engineering Exposition 2009, that was held at the Pacifico Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture (Japan) from May 20 to 22.

It works by, having  the driver’s full face and his/her face looking at the center of the car navigation system are shot with the camera. The former is used to adjust the shape of the face and the positions of the eyes, etc, while the latter is for adjusting the relationship between the eye direction and the orientation of the face
.
If these settings are done, the system starts recognizing the driver’s face, and the section that the driver is looking at is indicated with a yellow frame.

The system used in the demonstration recognized which of eight areas was being looked at by the driver. The eight areas are the left, center and right areas of the windshield, the left mirror, the right mirror, the meters, the car navigation system and the audio system. The system can also be used to alert the driver to drowsy driving by detecting blinks in the future, Toshiba said.

The company used a PC in the demonstration. It said that real time processing is possible with the computational performance of a typical notebook PC.

Toshiba is considering reducing the volume of computation for embedded CPUs by, for example, decreasing the number of points of a wire frame model used to recognize a face, when commercializing the system.
